Laptop Cleaning in Prague: Why Overheating Kills the Motherboard, Not Just Slows the System
A modern laptop is a triumph of engineering and, at the same time, a physical compromise. Inside a case 15–20 mm thick, today’s processors and GPUs would have needed massive coolers just five years ago. This system has no safety margin. Any drop in heat dissipation of just 10–15% starts a chain of motherboard degradation.
At FixMax.cz we see devices every day that are brought in “just for a clean, it’s very noisy”, but under whose heatsinks the destruction of the power circuits has already begun.
Why modern laptops overheat faster
Cooling systems used to have headroom. Today they do not. In turbo mode the processor instantly raises its clock speed, power draw jumps, and the system runs at its limit.
The main causes of overheating in Prague:
- City dust and older housing: Microparticles clog the heatsink fins, forming a dense “felt”.
- Worn-out thermal interfaces: over time thermal paste and thermal pads lose their conductive properties, dry out and stop transferring heat properly.
- Lead-free solder: Under constant temperature swings lead-free solder becomes brittle and porous, leading to microcracks in the joints and chips “lifting off”.
- Dense layout: Because modern devices are so compact, the GPU, processor, VRM circuits and control chips sit millimetres apart, heating the entire board.
The hidden threat: how VRMs and DrMOS power stages die
Most users watch the CPU temperature. But the most vulnerable part is the VRM (power delivery). These components work under extreme load. At 100–110°Cthey start to degrade:
- Resistance and heat losses increase.
- “Thermal runaway” begins.
- The power circuit fails, and the laptop “just won’t turn on”.
FixMax engineers see this as the result of months of accumulated thermal wear that could have been prevented by timely maintenance.
The pitfalls of DIY cleaning and “budget” repair shops
Mistake #1: A can of compressed air
Compressed air does not remove dust – it packs it deeper into the heatsink. It creates the illusion of cleaning, but local hot spots remain.
Mistake #2: Cheap thermal paste and the pump-out effect
Under temperature cycling, budget pastes are “squeezed out” from under the die (the pump-out effect). After 2-3 months the laptop heats up again, even though you “just cleaned it”.
Mistake #3: The wrong thermal pads
If a VRM pad is 0.5 mm thicker or thinner than specified, the heatsink will sit unevenly. The CPU sensor will show normal values while the power section burns out.
The FixMax.cz professional standard: materials and technology
We do not use “universal” pastes. Our choice is industrial solutions proven by years of experience and used by industry leaders (Apple, ASUS, MSI, Lenovo, Acer ):
- Honeywell (PTM7950): A phase-change material. It does not dry out or pump out for years.
- Laird and Denka: Thermal pads with ideal compression to protect video memory.
- Liquid metal: Used only in nickel-plated systems with full contact insulation.
Our advantage — thermal imaging diagnostics
FixMax is one of the few repair shops in Prague where every cleaning is accompanied by analysis with a thermal imaging camera. We see the heat distribution across the entire board and find VRM and DrMOS “hot spots” that standard software does not show.
Why laptops die 3–4 months after a poor-quality cleaning
This is a typical scenario in repair practice:
- CPU and GPU sensors read “normal”,
- the VRM overheats locally,
- the DrMOS runs at its limit,
- degradation continues unseen.
A few weeks later the circuit fails — without warning.
How engineers choose thermal paste and thermal pads
Choosing a thermal interface is not about marketing or the highest W/m·K.
What matters is mechanics, stability and predictability.
Why PTM7950 is used for the CPU/GPU
PTM7950 is a phase-change material, not a classic paste.
Advantages:
- it compensates for unevenness of BGA chips and the heatsink,
- it does not dry out or “pump out”,
- it forms a stable layer of a set thickness,
- it is ideal for the fixed mounting pressure of laptops.
That is why it is used in MacBook Pro and high-end gaming models.
Why Laird / Fujipoly pads are used for VRM and memory
For the VRM, it is not only thermal conductivity that matters, but also:
- compression (the pad must not “sag”),
- elasticity when the board flexes,
- stability under thermal cycling.
Cheap pads lose contact after 6–12 months — and that is exactly when the problems start
Why “the most powerful paste” is not always the best choice
Critical factors:
- the pump-out effect (paste being squeezed out),
- ageing under load,
- mismatch with the heatsink mounting pressure.
That is why MX-6 or Kryonaut Extreme are often more reliable than extreme solutions
Why liquid metal is dangerous for mass-market service
Liquid metal:
- conducts electricity,
- destroys aluminium,
- requires perfect insulation,
- does not forgive mistakes.
It is acceptable only in highly specialised engineering cases, not as a standard solution.
What professional cooling system cleaning includes
- full laptop disassembly,
- heatsink and fan cleaning,
- VRM and video memory servicing,
- precise choice of thermal interfaces,
- mounting pressure check,
- thermal imaging diagnostics and stress tests.
Summary
Overheating does not kill laptops immediately.
It kills them methodically — through the VRM, DrMOS and solder degradation.
Professional cleaning:
- prevents power circuit failure,
- protects the CPU and GPU,
- extends the life of the board by years.
Ignoring cooling is not saving money – it is a hardware failure postponed.
Summary
How long does an Apple laptop repair take?
Most simple jobs – laptop, phone and computer repairs in Prague – are done within a few hours. Complex work can take 1-3 days, and sometimes ordering parts can take several weeks.
How often should a laptop be cleaned
Depending on how the laptop is used, we recommend cleaning it every 6-12 months.
Do you use original parts?
We repair laptops and other devices only with proven, reliable components. We install only original or certified parts to keep devices running stably.
Do you give a warranty on laptop repairs?
All work and installed parts come with a warranty of up to 12 months.
If the problem returns within that period, we will fix it free of charge.
Can I get an urgent same-day repair?
Yes, most popular services (screen, battery and connector replacement) are done on the same day.
If the fault needs a complex repair, we will give you the exact turnaround time after diagnostics.
What should I do if my device got wet?
Do not turn it on and do not try to dry it yourself.
Bring the device in as soon as possible — we will clean and diagnose it to reduce the risk of serious damage.
What if I cleaned my laptop myself and now it won't turn on?
We believe laptop repairs and all service work should be done only by professionals.
But if it has already happened, disconnect the battery and bring the device to us for diagnostics – we will be happy to help.
